Its always good to protect your skin from staining when colouring your hair, there is couple of thing you can use. Most salons use barrier cream but in the case of not being able to find this product you can also use stuff around the house like Vaseline or any think with a oil base. When applying barrier cream or Vaseline around the hair line you have to be very careful not to coat the hair as this will stop the colour from taking.

If you are just doing a root application follow step 1,2,3 if you are doing all over application follow 1 to 4,

Lets start at the roots!

Step 1
Best way to start when applying a colour is put the colour all the way around the hair line then split the hair into four sections from forehead to the top of your neck (nape) and then ear to ear applying the colour as you go.

Step 2
Going back to the top of the head starting with the right hand sections take 5mm sections as you go down for the top of the head to the ear then doing the same with the left hand side.

Step 3
Doing the same as the step 2, right and left section do the same with the back sections, not forgetting to start from top to bottom.
With all the section that you do it is always best to cross check you do this by going the opposite direction than you did before.
Then to leave on for the amount of time needed

Taking the colour through!

Step 4
Once the time for the roots run out it is time to apply the colour to the rest of the hair (mid- lengths and ends) the best way to do this is to take about 3cm section applying the colour for the root to the end of the hair as you go once all the hair is coved in colour it is best to carefully comb in throw. Leave for the rest of the time then ready to be washed off.

There are different ways of using of putting highlights in your hair you can use a cap, foil or easy mesh, these methods are best on different hair.
So I will talk you through these different methods.

The cap

With using a cap you can only use one colour and it is best to have someone to help you.
It is best to use the cap on short to mid length hair as if you hair is to long it can be vary painful and can brake your hair.

When using a cap always make sure you brush all your knots are out then put your hair where it natural falls, to help get the cap on I have found putting talcum powder in the cap you will find this will help it slide over the hair, put the front of the cap to your forehead and then pull over the rest of your head. Once the cap is on you now have to pull the hair throw the hols in the cap.
You can pull the hair throw as thick or as thin as you want, always start pulling the hair throw from the middle of the head and work out words at all times once all the hair is pulled throw the holes you need to carefully comb all knots out.
Now it is time to put your bleach or high lift tint on when doing this try not to press down hard as this could push the bleach through the holes of the cap which would give a bleed mark.

Highlight with foils or easy mesh

When doing highlight in foil or easy mesh can take more time and is not very easy to do your self, but the finished results can be far more subtle the using a cap method.
With this method has got to be done a quickly as possible this is to prevent the first section being lighter than the last section.
Always start at the nape of the neck tack a small section about 5cm then using a tail comb weave in and out of the section.
Now you need to place your foil or easy mesh under your section of hair holding the hair and foil in place with one hand it is time to put the bleach on the hair with the other hand once you have done these you need to fold the foil up you do these by folding it in half then fold the side in each side these will also stop the bleach from leaking out.
Now carry this all over the head.
